If you think you could get interested in the sport of Target Rifle shooting the first thing you must do is get the right training from a reputable source. The National Rifle Association of Great Britain (the NRA) run Probationary Courses for Membership. The Course lasts for three months and gives a good grounding in all the NRA shooting disciplines including Target Rifle, F-Class rifle, Gallery Rifle and Muzzle-Loading revolver. If you are successful in passing the Course you will be awarded a Certificate and you will then be permitted to apply for Full Individual Membership of the NRA.
Another reputable source for training in the discipline of Target Rifle shooting is the WAVERLEY DISTRICT RIFLE CLUB. Whatever your age or level of fitness you are welcome to enquire about joining our Club. If you are a complete novice we would suggest that you apply for our Training Course as a ‘Probationary Member’. We will train you to the National standards of safety and help you on the road to success in the sport. If you are already an experienced shot and are a Full Individual Member of the NRA we would welcome your Application for Provisional Membership. For those who may wish to have a look at the sport without participating in the shooting itself until they are sure, we offer the category of Devotee. This would allow you to learn about the discipline, watch us in operation and perhaps help out with some of the chores.
These are our Categories of Membership:
- Full Member
- Provisional Member
- Probationary Member
- Devotee
- Guest
1) Full Membership:
There are three routes toward Full Membership: (1) you may join us as a Probationary Member, pass the Training Course in a minimum period of three months; or (2) you may join as a Probationary Member and follow our six-month Course; or (3) for those NRA Members who have passed the NRA Probationary Training Course to become Full Individual Members of the NRA you may join as a Provisional Member and shoot with us for three months before applying for Full Membership. Those successful in passing our Training Course would be able to apply for Full Membership.
2) Provisional Membership:
This Category is designed to suit the experienced Target Rifle shot who has either a personal FAC or Full Individual Membership of the NRA. After shooting with us for three months you would be expected to apply for Full Membership of our Club.
3) Probationary Membership:
There are two types of Probationary Membership designed to suit Probationers of different levels of experience. For those over the age of sixteen and with little or no shooting experience we would recommend that you begin by sitting the Training Course. If our Committee decides that you have done sufficiently well during the three months of the Course you may be offered the chance to apply for Full Membership without serving the remainder of the six-month Probationary period. The purpose of Probationary Membership is not to turn you into a high-scoring sharp-shooter, but to be SAFE in the handling of firearms and ammunition. Also it gives the rest of the Members a chance to see whether or not they would enjoy the pleasure of your company, and you theirs.
4) Devotee:
This is the Category for those who might wish one day to learn to shoot and would like to be involved with the Club and see what shooting is all about before trying it for themselves. Applicants for Devotee Membership under the age of sixteen are subject to the same conditions as for Youth Membership. Any Devotee interested in shooting as a Guest Member must first apply for Membership as a Guest Member for the particular Guest Day and must certify the ‘Section 21' conditions as above.
5) Guest:
A Home Office Approved Rifle Club is permitted by the Police to hold a number of Guest Meetings each year. We would like to invite out Devotee Members and our families and friends to come and shoot with us on occasion, in the hope that they may decide to take up the sport themselves. Before being permitted to shoot under strict and constant close supervision, a Guest must apply on a Form certifying their acceptability under the ‘Section 21' conditions mentioned above. A small fee will be charged, please ask the Secretary for details using the Contact Us page.
To enquire about membership please complete the E-mail enquiry form and send it to the Secretary by clicking the “Send” button. The Secretary may invite you to attend an interview with Members of Waverley District Rifle Club Committee, normally at a Bisley location. Following your successful interview the Secretary will contact the Police Firearms Department to seek their approval for your application to proceed, the outcome of which you will be informed. |
